Aguni Island
Island Remote Okinawan island with traditional Ryukyuan culture
Small Okinawan island reachable by ferry; visitors come for diving, snorkeling, quiet beaches and local island life, with only limited tourist facilities.
Aguni Island is a small inhabited island in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, located in the East China Sea northwest of Okinawa’s main island. It is a rural island community with a small population and limited services.
The island offers quiet coastal scenery, local fishing ports and coral-fringed seascapes used for snorkeling and diving. There are basic visitor facilities in the main village but no large-scale resorts.
Aguni has been part of the Ryukyu island chain and shares the archipelago’s historical ties to the Ryukyu Kingdom and later incorporation into modern Japan. Local life has traditionally focused on fishing and subsistence agriculture.
Aguni lies off the northwest coast of Okinawa’s main island and is reached by sea from Naha and other ports in Okinawa Prefecture. Its small size and offshore position make it a distinct, remote community within the prefecture.
- Transport: Served by regular ferry connections to Okinawa's main island, making it reachable for day trips and short stays.
- Settlement pattern: Small, sparsely populated island with a single main settlement and local fisheries rather than large tourist infrastructure.
