Agora of Smyrna
Museum Ancient Roman agora ruins in 3zmir, Turkey
The Roman-era agora in İzmir’s city center, with excavated columns, foundations and museum displays; visitors come for archaeological remains, city history and nearby waterfront promenades.
The Agora of Smyrna is the remains of the ancient market square of Smyrna, located in the Konak district of modern İzmir, Turkey. It has Hellenistic origins and was substantially reworked in the Roman period, making it one of the main archaeological sites inside the modern city.
Remains include colonnaded streets, shop foundations and monumental masonry that outline the layout of the agora and adjacent commercial blocks. The exposed ruins form an open-air museum area that can be walked through from end to end in a short visit.
The site was buried and built over during later periods and was excavated and cleared in the 20th century, revealing structures from Greek and Roman occupation. Over time the agora changed from a central commercial and civic space in antiquity to archaeological ruins integrated into the modern urban fabric.
The agora sits in central İzmir close to the Kemeraltı bazaar and Konak district, within walking distance of the city waterfront. It is directly accessible from central public-transport stops and lies inside the dense urban area of İzmir.
- Location: Located beside İzmir's historic Kemeraltı market, the site is an easily reachable open-air archaeological area in the city centre.
- Visiting tip: Best visited outside the midday heat when the open ruins and colonnades are easier to explore on foot.
