Aggersborg
Archaeological Site Large Viking ring fortress on Danish North Sea coast
Aggersborg on northern Jutland is a reconstructed Viking ring fortress with visible earthworks, ditches and interpretive panels explaining its role in Viking-era defence.
Aggersborg is a Viking-age ring fortress on the North Jutland coast of Denmark and is regarded as the largest of the Danish ring castles. Archaeological work dates the construction to the late 10th century.
The site presents a circular rampart and outer ditch with an overall diameter of roughly 240 metres; the earthworks are the most visible feature for visitors. Traces of the internal layout can be seen, showing the fortress was divided into quadrants with timber building foundations and a planned street pattern.
Built during the late Viking Age, around 980 AD, Aggersborg is conventionally associated with the centralizing activities of Danish rulers in that period. Excavations have revealed structural timber remains and evidence for short-term military or administrative use.
Aggersborg sits in the North Jutland Region near the Limfjord coast, close to the village of Aggersund in northern Jutland. The site is in a low-lying coastal landscape and is accessible from nearby local roads.
