Agaya Gangai is a prominent waterfall in the Kolli Hills (Kolli Malai) of Namakkal district, Tamil Nadu, whose name means “Ganges of the Sky.” It is an important local natural and pilgrimage site.

The waterfall descends from the highlands into a forested valley; short treks and steps lead down to viewing points and to nearby temple precincts. The site is visited for both its natural scenery and its religious associations with nearby shrines.

The fall and surrounding hills have long been part of local religious practice and folklore, with temple complexes at the base of the falls that attract pilgrims and visitors.

Located within the Kolli Hills of the Eastern Ghats in Namakkal district, the waterfall sits inland from the Tamil Nadu plains and is accessed via roads and footpaths from the hill villages.

  • Best time to visit: Water flow is strongest during the southwest monsoon, making the post-monsoon and monsoon months the best time to see the fall at full volume.

What to See #

  • Arapaleeswarar Temple: Arapaleeswarar Temple and associated cave shrines at the base of the falls form a local pilgrimage site and starting point for some walking routes.

How to Get to Agaya Gangai #

The falls are in the Kolli Hills, Tirunelveli district. From Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) or Madurai, take a bus or hire a car to Namakkal or Papanasam; Papanasam is the usual base (approx. 60-90 km depending on route). From Papanasam, local buses or taxis run to the Kolli Hills foothills; the final approach is a 1-3 hour uphill drive with narrow switchbacks. Once at the hill town, the trailhead to Agaya Gangai is a short walk from the local market area.

Tips for Visiting Agaya Gangai #

  • Start at the top (Papanasam) and descend the path toward the falls - the view from above is less crowded and reveals the waterfall's full drop.
  • Wear sturdy shoes: the trail includes rocky steps and river crossings, especially in monsoon months.
  • Bring cash for the small tea stalls at the trailhead; there is limited formal infrastructure down by the falls.
  • Avoid the immediate post-monsoon weeks (late November-December) when the stream is unpredictable and paths may be slippery.
