Island Large Alaskan island with rugged wilderness and wildlife

Afognak Island is a large, forested island in the Kodiak Archipelago in southern Alaska, separated from Kodiak Island by the Afognak Strait. It is characterized by rugged coastline, dense spruce forests, rivers and bays used by salmon and other marine life.
The island is popular for sport fishing, hunting, and wildlife observation, particularly brown bears and migratory birds, and contains a mixture of private native corporation lands and largely undeveloped public wilderness. Visitor access is seasonal and typically requires boat or floatplane from Kodiak.
Indigenous Alutiiq people inhabited the island for centuries before Russian and American periods of contact brought new settlements and economic uses. Over time much of the island has remained sparsely populated, with traditional subsistence activities and limited commercial use.
Geographically the island lies off the southern coast of mainland Alaska as part of the Kodiak group, northwest of the Gulf of Alaska and separated from Kodiak Island by the Afognak Strait; the island is accessed from Kodiak town by water or aircraft.
- Access: Access is primarily by boat or floatplane from Kodiak or other nearby islands; there are no road connections to mainland Alaska.
- Wildlife and recreation: Home to salmon runs and coastal brown bear habitat, making it notable for fishing and wildlife viewing.
