Aegae (modern Vergina) was the ancient capital of Macedon and is an archaeological site in Central Macedonia, Greece. It is best known for its late Classical and early Hellenistic royal tombs and associated palace remains.
The site served as a capital and royal burial place for the Macedonian dynasty in the 4th century BC. Major archaeological work in the 1970s uncovered several intact or partially intact tombs attributed to the Macedonian elite, providing new evidence about royal funerary rites and material culture.
