Mountains Protected New York highlands with lakes and alpine peaks
Forested mountains in New York State with thousands of lakes, High Peaks trails and Lake Placid’s Olympic venues. Visitors hike, canoe, ski and study Adirondack Great Camp architecture.
The Adirondack Mountains are a large upland region in northeastern New York State noted for rugged peaks, forests and thousands of lakes. The area is largely contained within the state-created Adirondack Park, established in 1892 to protect water and timber resources.
The region is a major outdoor recreation area offering hiking, backpacking, paddling and winter sports. The High Peaks region contains the traditional group of 46 peaks associated with the Adirondack hiking challenge, and Mount Marcy reaches 1,629 m (5,344 ft). Lake-based recreation is extensive across hundreds of lakes and ponds, and developed villages such as Lake Placid provide lodging, services and cultural events.
European-American development intensified in the 19th century with roads, resorts and timber industries, prompting the creation of the Adirondack Park in 1892 and the legal Adirondack Forest Preserve. Conservation legislation and park management have shaped land use since then, balancing private lands with protected public forest.
Geographically the range sits in northeastern New York, roughly north of the Hudson Valley and extending toward the St. Lawrence watershed. The park spans a mix of mountainous terrain, plateaus, and numerous inland lakes and rivers, with the nearest major cities including Albany to the southeast and Montreal to the north-northwest.
- Highest point: Summit of Mount Marcy at 1,629 m (5,344 ft) gives the highest viewpoint in the range.
- Best time to visit: Fall foliage and summer hiking are peak visitor seasons; many trails and trailheads are busiest from June to October.
What to See #
- Adirondack Park: Covers a protected area of roughly 6,000,000 acres (the Adirondack Park), created by New York State in 1892 to conserve forests and water resources.
- High Peaks: A concentrated high-country zone with the original 46 High Peaks; includes the highest point in New York, Mount Marcy, at 1,629 m (5,344 ft).
- Lake Placid: A village that served as host to the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980 and is a major base for hiking, skiing and lake recreation in the region.
How to Get to Adirondack Mountains #
The Adirondacks are a large region in upstate New York reached by road and rail. From Albany and points south, take Interstate 87 (the Adirondack Northway) north into the park; driving times vary by destination within the range (roughly 1-4 hours from Albany depending on where you go). Amtrak’s Adirondack service and regional buses serve some towns on the park’s southern and eastern edges for onward local travel.
Tips for Visiting Adirondack Mountains #
- Avoid summer holiday weekends at the most popular trailheads (High Peaks, Lake Placid area); start hikes at dawn on weekdays or use less-frequented trailheads to find parking and quieter trails.
- Plan visits for late September to early October if you want fall colour-that shoulder season delivers dramatic foliage with fewer crowds than the peak summer season.
- Check local ranger stations or the Adirondack Park Agency website for current trail conditions and any parking restrictions at trailheads (popular lots fill early), and consider shuttle or secondary trail access points to avoid full lots.
Best Time to Visit Adirondack Mountains #
For hiking and lakes, summer is best; for foliage, aim for peak autumn colors in September-October; winter attracts snow‑sports enthusiasts.
