Addu City
Islands Southern Maldivian city spanning several atolls
Addu City in the Maldives occupies islands including Gan and Hithadhoo in Seenu Atoll; visitors find wreck and reef diving, local markets and a distinct southern atoll culture.
Addu City is an urban administrative area at the southern end of the Maldives, occupying multiple islands of the southern atoll (Seenu/Addu Atoll). It is the largest population centre in the southern Maldives and includes an international airport.
The city comprises several inhabited islands that are connected by causeways and bridges to form a continuous urban and suburban area; main islands include Hithadhoo, Maradhoo and Gan. The atoll is noted for coral reefs and year-round diving and snorkelling opportunities, with a range of local guesthouses and dive operators.
Gan island hosted a British airbase during the mid-20th century; the former military infrastructure later supported civil aviation and development. The islands have grown into the principal southern urban centre of the Maldives and serve as the administrative hub for the atoll.
Addu City sits at the southern end of the Maldivian island chain in Seenu Atoll, roughly several hundred kilometres south of the capital, Malé, and is served by Gan International Airport.
- Inter-island links: Islands within the urban area are linked by bridges and causeways, creating a contiguous settlement across multiple islands.
- Airport access: Gan International Airport provides scheduled flights to and from Malé and is the principal air gateway for the atoll.
