Addo Elephant National Park
Park South African national park protecting large elephant population
East of Gqeberha, Addo Elephant National Park protects a large elephant population alongside other game and a marine section. Tourists arrive for self‑drive safaris, guided drives and coastal landscapes.
Addo Elephant National Park is a South African national park created to protect the region’s elephant population and preserve a range of Eastern Cape ecosystems. Established in 1931, the park has expanded since its founding to incorporate surrounding plains, mountain areas and a marine protected zone in Algoa Bay.
The park supports a variety of large mammals and birdlife and offers game drives, guided walks and conservation education; its inclusion of a marine protected area extends protection to seabirds, sharks and seasonal whales. Addo is managed to combine wildlife conservation with tourism infrastructure including camps and designated game viewing routes.
Addo lies inland from the coast near the city of Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) in the Eastern Cape, with the main park entrance and visitor facilities reachable by road from the city and surrounding towns.
- Origins: The park was originally established in 1931 to protect the remaining local elephant population and has since been enlarged to include additional habitats and a marine component.
- How to visit: Visitors typically use self‑drive game routes and guided drives from the park's main camp; game viewing is best early morning and late afternoon when animals are most active.
What to See #
- Addo Main Reserve: The main Addo protected area where game drives and wildlife viewing are concentrated, including the park's visitor centre and accommodation options.
- Zuurberg and highland sectors: Mountain and forested sections of the park such as the Zuurberg foothills that extend the protected habitats beyond the arid interior plains.
- Marine protected area (Algoa Bay): The marine protected area off the Algoa Bay coast that extends the park's boundary to include seabirds, sharks and seasonal whale and dolphin activity.
How to Get to Addo Elephant National Park #
Addo is about 75 km from Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) by road; follow the N2 east from Gqeberha and take the R335 inland toward the Matyholweni (Main) Gate, which is the most commonly used entrance. From Johannesburg it’s roughly a 7-8 hour drive via the N2 and N6 (or a short flight to Gqeberha followed by a 1-1.5 hour drive). Within the park, sealed roads connect the main rest camps; 2WD vehicles can access most areas in dry weather but a 4x4 is useful for rougher tracks.
Tips for Visiting Addo Elephant National Park #
- Arrive in the late afternoon game-drive window (around 3-6pm) when elephants congregate at waterholes and light is softer for photography.
- Use the main Matyholweni (Main) Gate if coming from Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha - it shortens driving time compared with the Addo Gate to the north.
- Don't skip the Zuurberg sections of the park if time allows - scenery changes from thicket to rolling Karoo-like slopes and fewer crowds.
- Book a guided drive with SANParks or a reputable local operator to increase chances of close, but safe, elephant encounters and to learn about the park's recovery history.
Best Time to Visit Addo Elephant National Park #
Best visited in spring and autumn for comfortable temperatures and active wildlife; winter mornings are crisp and clear for photography.
