Adare Peninsula
Cape Prominent Antarctic peninsula at the Ross Sea entrance
Adare Peninsula in Victoria Land marks Cape Adare and hosts large Adélie penguin rookeries, historic huts and landing beaches visited by scientific parties and expedition cruises.
The Adare Peninsula is a rocky promontory on the northern edge of Victoria Land in Antarctica, projecting into the Ross Sea. It is notable for containing Cape Adare and early Antarctic historic sites.
The peninsula is chiefly visited for wildlife and historic interest, with large seabird colonies and established landing sites at Cape Adare. Human presence is limited and seasonal, focused on guided landings for heritage and wildlife viewing rather than infrastructure or long-term facilities.
The area at Cape Adare was the location of huts erected by Carsten Borchgrevink’s Southern Cross Expedition in 1899, among the earliest structures built on the Antarctic continent. Since then the site has been recognized for its historic value and natural colonies.
It lies at the northern extremity of Victoria Land, projecting into the Ross Sea on Antarctica’s coastline facing the Southern Ocean. The peninsula and Cape Adare form the northern approach to the coastal region of the Ross Sea.
- Historic huts: Contains huts built by the Southern Cross Expedition in 1899 as one of the earliest Antarctic overwintering sites.
- Wildlife: Important breeding site for seabirds, in particular large Adélie penguin rookeries and other colonial seabirds.
What to See #
- Cape Adare: Prominent cape at the northeast tip of the peninsula that marks the entrance to the Ross Sea; contains early Antarctic historic sites and large seabird colonies.
How to Get to Adare Peninsula #
Adare Peninsula lies in northern Victoria Land near Cape Adare and has no roads or permanent facilities. The only practical ways to reach it are by Antarctic expedition ship (typically embarking from ports in New Zealand such as Christchurch or Bluff or from southern Australia) with Zodiac landings, or by helicopter from established Antarctic bases (McMurdo/Scott Base) during organized scientific or tourist operations. Landings and shore visits depend on sea-ice and weather conditions, so travel must be arranged with an operator experienced in Antarctic logistics.
Tips for Visiting Adare Peninsula #
- Adare Peninsula is only accessible as part of an Antarctic expedition; plan with an IAATO-affiliated operator and expect landings to be weather- and ice-dependent.
- Choose smaller ships or voyages with flexible itineraries to increase chances of a landing and to reduce crowding onshore; be prepared for last‑minute changes and follow all expedition staff briefings and protected‑area rules.
Best Time to Visit Adare Peninsula #
Visit only in the austral summer (roughly November-March) when sea ice is reduced and expedition vessels operate; otherwise the area is generally inaccessible.
