Cape Prominent Antarctic cape with historic expedition huts
Cape Adare on Antarctica’s Ross Sea coast is known for large Adélie penguin colonies and early Antarctic exploration sites, with historic huts and wildlife-focused expedition landings.
Cape Adare is a prominent headland at the northern entrance to the Ross Sea on the Borchgrevink Coast of Victoria Land, Antarctica. It is notable for both its large Adélie penguin colonies and for historic expedition structures dating to the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration.
The cape contains the remains of simple expedition huts and associated material remains from expeditions at the turn of the 20th century, along with dense penguin rookeries that draw scientific and visitor interest in the austral summer. The combination of cultural heritage and wildlife makes the cape a frequently cited site in Antarctic history.
Norwegian explorer Carsten Borchgrevink led the Southern Cross Expedition, which established the hut site and carried out the first documented overwintering on the Antarctic mainland in 1899, events that marked a new phase in polar exploration. Subsequent visits have recorded both the historic structures and the long-term presence of seabird colonies.
Geographically the headland projects into the Ross Sea at the northern tip of Victoria Land; access is by ship, and landings are governed by Antarctic Treaty protocols and environmental management rules.
- Historic first overwintering: Site of the first documented wintering party in Antarctica in 1899 during the British Southern Cross Expedition, making it important for Antarctic exploration history.
- Access and protection: Landing and visitation are subject to Antarctic Treaty visitor guidelines and strict wildlife protections; access is by sea and weather-dependent.
What to See #
- Borchgrevink huts: Two simple timber-and-iron huts built during the Southern Cross Expedition that represent the earliest known structures used for Antarctic overwintering and are of historical and archaeological significance.
- Penguin rookery: Large coastal rookeries of Adélie penguins that form a dense breeding colony and are a major wildlife attraction in the austral summer.
