Adab (city)
Archaeological Site Ancient Sumerian city site with archaeological remains
An ancient Sumerian city site (Tell Bismaya) in Wasit Governorate, Adab contains Bronze Age ruins excavated in the 20th century. Archaeologists and history travelers visit for cuneiform-era remains; on-site facilities are minimal.
Adab was an ancient Sumerian city-state attested in Mesopotamian cuneiform records and located in what is now Wasit Governorate in Iraq. The site is represented by a tell where archaeological remains from the 3rd millennium BCE have been documented.
The city appears in Early Bronze Age texts and was part of the broader Sumerian city-state landscape in southern Mesopotamia; its material remains include building foundations, pottery and inscribed artifacts uncovered by archaeological work. Over time the site fell out of use as political and environmental conditions in the alluvial plain changed.
The tell sits within Iraq’s Tigris-Euphrates alluvial plain in Wasit Governorate, some distance southeast of modern Baghdad, and is one of several ancient urban sites in the region preserved as archaeological mounds.
- Archaeological importance: The site corresponds to an ancient Sumerian city named in cuneiform texts and is represented today by an archaeological tell where excavations have identified urban remains from the 3rd millennium BCE.
