The ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area in southern South Carolina established to conserve estuarine, marsh and coastal habitats within the ACE Basin landscape. The ACE acronym refers to the Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto rivers that define the basin.
The refuge protects tidal marshes, freshwater wetlands and associated upland habitats that support waterfowl, wading birds and other coastal wildlife. It is managed to conserve habitat while providing opportunities for wildlife-dependent recreation including birdwatching, fishing and regulated hunting.
The refuge was created as part of coordinated conservation efforts to protect one of the larger undeveloped estuarine systems on the U.S. Atlantic coast and is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The refuge lies in southern South Carolina between the Charleston and Beaufort regions, occupying parts of the coastal plain where the three rivers meet and flow to the Atlantic.
