Abraham Lake

Lake Artificial Alberta lake famous for methane ice bubble formations

A reservoir on Alberta’s North Saskatchewan River, Abraham Lake draws photographers for winter ‘bubble’ ice formations, anglers in summer and scenic drives along Highway 11.

Main image

Abraham Lake is an artificial reservoir in western Alberta, Canada, formed by the construction of the Bighorn Dam on the North Saskatchewan River in the early 1970s. It occupies a scenic valley in the eastern Canadian Rockies and is known as a roadside natural and photographic attraction.

In winter the lake often traps methane rising from decomposing organic material, producing concentric white bubbles frozen within clear ice; this phenomenon has made the lake a frequent subject for photographers. The lake’s shoreline and surrounding slopes also attract hikers and viewpoint visitors during warmer months.

The reservoir was created as part of regional hydroelectric development and functions for water storage and power generation. Vegetation and shorelines were altered when the lake filled, and the area is now an established recreational corridor along the David Thompson Highway.

Abraham Lake lies along the David Thompson Highway in west-central Alberta, east of the main national parks of the Canadian Rockies and accessible by car from regional towns and highway pullouts.

  • Origin: Artificial reservoir created by damming the North Saskatchewan River; formed in the early 1970s as part of regional hydroelectric development.
  • Winter methane bubbles: Frozen methane bubbles trapped in the lake ice during winter produce a distinctive and widely photographed phenomenon, best seen on clear, cold days between December and February.

What to See #

  • Bighorn Dam: Bighorn Dam is the hydroelectric structure that created the reservoir; its outflow is part of the North Saskatchewan River system and controls lake levels seasonally.
  • Viewpoints and highway access: Roadside viewpoints along the David Thompson Highway and adjacent pullouts provide the nearest and most-used locations for photography and winter access to the frozen surface.

Tips for Visiting Abraham Lake #

  • Visit in winter for the methane-bubble ice phenomenon-clear, cold days after sustained sub-zero temperatures are ideal.
  • If driving from David Thompson Highway (Highway 11), stop at pullouts and watch for parking on the west shore for best photo angles.
  • Bring crampons or stabilizing footwear in icy seasons; the lakeshore can be treacherous when frozen.
