Aberystwyth Castle
Castle Ruined coastal castle overlooking Cardigan Bay promenade
Perched above Cardigan Bay, Aberystwyth Castle offers ruined medieval walls, coastal views and easy access to the town’s seafront, university cultural life and nearby hiking routes.
Aberystwyth Castle is a ruined medieval fortress on the coast of Aberystwyth in Ceredigion, Wales, noted for its cliff-top position overlooking Cardigan Bay. It survives as a set of curtain walls, towers and fragmentary masonry open to visitors.
The castle was erected during the late 13th century as part of English royal military campaigns in Wales and saw action in later medieval conflicts, including capture and damage during Welsh uprisings. Over time it fell into ruin and much of the stone was quarried for local building; the surviving remains are maintained as an historic ruin.
It stands on the seafront headland at Aberystwyth in mid-Wales, directly above the town centre and the seafront promenade, with views across Cardigan Bay.
- Coastal viewpoint: The castle ruins sit on a coastal promontory and offer panoramic views along Cardigan Bay, visible from the town promenade and seafront paths.

Tips for Visiting Aberystwyth Castle #
- Walk the seafront first: the Castle's low curtain walls sit above the promenade and the view of Cardigan Bay is the site's best photographic moment.
- Arrive early in summer to avoid crowds from the nearby university and pier - the west ramparts catch the morning light.
- Bring a windbreaker; the sea breeze off the prom is unpleasantly sincere.
