Abbey-Church of Saint-Ouen, Rouen

The Abbey-Church of Saint-Ouen in Rouen is a large Gothic abbey church on the north side of Rouen’s old town. Its scale, lofty vaults and fine decorative stonework make it one of the major Gothic churches of Normandy.

Inside there is a high nave and choir with significant stained glass and carved stonework, and the church houses an important 19th-century organ by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. The building’s vertical proportions and façade details are characteristic of late medieval Gothic design.

The abbey began as a Benedictine foundation and the present church was built chiefly between the 14th and 16th centuries, replacing earlier structures on the site. It has served liturgical and communal functions across successive centuries and retains much of its medieval plan.

Saint-Ouen stands within Rouen’s historic centre, north of Rouen Cathedral and within the city’s medieval street pattern.
