Abadan Island sits in Khuzestan province on the Arvand Rud (Shatt al-Arab) estuary and contains the city of Abadan and a major oil refining complex. The island’s refinery was established by the Anglo-Persian/Anglo-Iranian oil interests in the early 20th century and anchored the island’s industrial development.
The island’s industrial facilities and port infrastructure are the main reasons people visit or study the site, along with the urban fabric of the city of Abadan. The refinery complex was one of the earliest large-scale oil refineries in the region and shaped the local economy and settlement patterns.
During the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s the island and city were the scene of major fighting and sustained heavy damage to infrastructure. Abadan Island sits near the Iran-Iraq maritime boundary in the lower reaches of the Tigris-Euphrates system, adjacent to the port city of Abadan and opposite parts of southern Iraq.

Overland travel through Khuzestan often involves checkpoints; carry ID and check local travel advisories before planning a visit.
