About Zhenyuan

Zhenyuan sits where steep karst cliffs meet the winding Wuyang River, its compact old town clustered along the water beneath temple-covered cliffs. The layout and many of the riverside streets preserve a traditional feel, with wooden shops, arched bridges and narrow lanes that are easy to explore on foot.

The town has long been an inland river port and religious centre, with temples, grottoes and ceremonial halls carved into the rockface; the Qinglong (Black Dragon) Cave area is the most famous of these sites. Surrounding countryside is home to Miao and other ethnic minority communities, whose festivals and handicrafts remain visible in markets and nearby villages.

Why Visit Zhenyuan?

Travellers come for the dramatic riverside setting, the concentration of cliffside temples and the relaxed atmosphere of the old streets. Boat trips on the Wuyang River provide striking views of caves, pagodas and bridges that can only be appreciated from the water. Zhenyuan also works well as a base to explore nearby Miao villages and other eastern Guizhou sights.
