History & Culture of Wat Suan Tan#
Wat Suan Tan, the ‘Monastery of the Sugar Palm Grove’, is one of Nan town’s finest temples, drawing visitors for its ancient chedi and large bronze Buddha. The image, Phra Chao Thong Thip, was cast in the mid-1400s by order of a Chiang Mai king and still sits within the lofty Sukhothai-style viharn; seated in pose, it blends Lanna and Sukhothai styles.
The grounds. The large chedi carries a series of niches on its lower level holding various works of art, and there are murals behind the bronze Buddha and at the main entrance. The viharn is a much later structure, beautifully decorated with tiered roofing and gold leaf on the façade above the entrance, and the peaceful grounds fill up during festivals.
Songkran. The yearly Songkran festival at Thai New Year is an especially fun time to visit, with colourful rituals and a huge fireworks display over the temple.
