History & Culture of Wat Ming Muang#
Just a few steps west of Wat Phumin in the town centre, Wat Ming Muang is worth a look while in the area, notable for Nan’s city pillar, a striking white exterior and vibrant murals on the inner walls of the bot.
The exterior. The shrine to the city pillar and the temple roof catch the eye from the street, every surface smothered in elaborate stucco carving and painted white. Locals frequently drop by to make offerings to the pillar, a tall gilded post draped in colourful robes.
The murals. These cannot compete with those at Wat Phumin for historical importance, having been added only recently, but they are so vibrant and detailed that they give visitors a clear picture of local life a century ago, with scenes of boat racing, weaving and the veneration of elephants.
