Wat Roka Kandal Travel Guide

This historic temple is a little more than a mile outside of Kratie town. Founded in the 1700s, this is one of the oldest preserved temples in Cambodia and an architectural highlight of a visit to Kratie Province.

Wat Roka Kandal fell into disrepair after being abandoned for decades. As most of the murals and wooden carvings were badly damaged by the elements, the only way to reopen it was with a massive restoration project. Rather than completely raze the old pagoda, a new one was built behind it.

Today, the old buildings are used as part of a handicraft project. This province is famous for its wicker work, and many of the best local products are produced here on temple grounds. International funding was secured both for the restoration and a program that teaches women how to weave quality wicker handicrafts.

The temple also enriches the province with sustainability programs. The main course teaches builders to use more sustainable materials including bamboo and wicker when constructing homes.

Trading courses (for craftspeople) are occasionally held, and tourists are allowed to venture in and have a look. There is also a gift shop selling wicker baskets along with ceramics and silk textiles.
