Situated in the center of Cambodia along the Mekong River, the small town of Sambor, which is home to some spectacular temples and pagodas, is a popular tourist destination.
The most common way to arrive at Sambor is by road from nearby Kampong Thom by bus, private taxi or self-riding on a hired motorcycle. Transport is available from the border town with Vietnam of Prey Pnov, with buses and taxis waiting on the Cambodian side.
The main attraction of Sambor is the numerous ancient temples and pagodas, some of which were built in the 11th century. Guided tours are a great way to see the Cambodian culture and learn of the interesting history of the town.
The road leading to Sambor from Kampong Thom is fairly rough and bumpy and during the wet season there are problems with mud resulting in vehicles becoming stuck. From Kampong Thom the journey takes approximately 3 hours by car. Traveling from Phnom Penh is possible by car, bus or boat and takes upward of 12 hours.
