Ton Sai Village Travel Guide

The unofficial capital of Thailand’s Phi Phi archipelago, Ton Sai Village is a bohemian beach community. There are no cars and very few motorbikes here though the streets can be crowded with pedestrian traffic during peak season.

Day-trippers flood Ton Sai Village during the day, but the atmosphere shifts into low gear after the last ferry departs for the mainland in the afternoon. At this point, those who are based in Ton Sai have the shops, restaurants and beaches to themselves.

While Phi Phi Don is one of Thailand’s more expensive destinations, Ton Sai Village has the greatest selection of mid-range and budget hotels. The ritziest accommodation is in quieter, secluded corners of the island.

In the evening, hungry vacationers transplant themselves from beach chairs to waterfront restaurants serving fresh seafood. This is the liveliest nightlife center on the island, and local pubs and bars are open until 02:00 or later.

Getting There & Away

Bicycles and longtail boats are the only mode of transport on Phi Phi Don. In the past, the only link to the mainland was via ferry (2 to 3 hours) though seaplanes to Phuket (around 30 minutes) are increasingly popular these days. The airport at Phuket operates a few international connections as well as quick service (less than an hour) to Bangkok.
