Museum Rudana

The Museum Rudana is a private art museum on Bali, Indonesia, dedicated to Balinese modern and contemporary art. It was created by collector and cultural patron Nyoman Rudana to promote local artists.

Galleries display paintings, sculptures and woodcarvings by Balinese artists alongside rotating exhibitions of contemporary Indonesian art. The museum also stages events and publications aimed at promoting Balinese visual culture to visitors and collectors.

The museum was established by Nyoman Rudana to showcase and promote Balinese art and artists; its development has been driven by his private collection and cultural initiatives. Over time it has served both as an exhibition space and as a platform for artist promotion and cultural education in Bali.

The museum sits in the cultural region of central Bali near Ubud, within Bali’s Gianyar regency, making it accessible from Ubud and other central-Bali tourist hubs.

A large, modern three-storey museum in Peliatan, on the southeastern edge of Ubud, Museum Rudana has done much to advance the appreciation of Balinese fine art. Its third floor holds the classical collection, with works by honoured names such as I Gusti Nyoman Lempad and Ida Bagus Made, while the lower floors display modern art gathered from across Indonesia and pieces by expatriate artists who adopted Balinese styles, among them Antonio Blanco.

In all, the museum holds more than 400 original paintings, some dating back over 160 years.

Next door, the Rudana Fine Art Gallery spreads across a series of open-air pavilions linked by breezy corridors and courtyards with fountains and flowering trees. Nearly everything on show, from paintings and sculpture to carved wooden furniture, is for sale, and because the gallery works alongside the museum it is a good place to buy work by some of Bali’s leading painters. The landscaped grounds make it a pleasant wander even if you are not buying.

Museum Rudana is in Peliatan, on Jalan Cok Rai Pudak, about 2 km southeast of Ubud Palace. The walk from the centre follows busy roads, so most visitors come by taxi, ride-hailing or scooter, often combining the visit with the woodcarving village of Mas just to the south. From Ngurah Rai airport the drive takes about an hour or more, depending on traffic.
