Mukdahan Travel Guide

Not a lot happens in the sleepy town of Mukdahan. Situated in northeastern Thailand, the town is close to Savannakhet in Laos and a good place to chill out for a while after crossing the border into Thailand.

Worth It?
Not unless you cross the border late in the day or need to take a break from traveling.
What to Do
shopping, visiting the local temples, relaxing by the river.
Best Time to Go
during the cool, dry season from November to March.
How Long?
A day or less is enough to see Mukdahan.

Mukdahan was established in the late Ayutthaya period when a group of people migrated from Laos to this pretty area. Although there is not a lot to entertain here, the lack of flashy attractions makes the town a good place to relax and unwind before exploring the rest of Thailand.

Sitting on the banks of the Mekong River, Mukdahan has a vibrant market place and this is a good place to buy cheap products from Laos, Vietnam and China. Wander along the river-front promenade to browse through the bargains, eat a cheap meal from one of the food stalls and enjoy the views across the river to Laos.

Travel to Mukdahan - Getting There

Most people hop across the border from Laos to Mukdahan. If you are traveling from Thailand, fly from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani or Nakhon Phanom and then catch a bus to Mukdahan. A cheaper option is to take a bus but the journey takes around 12 hours.
