Not a lot happens in the sleepy town of Mukdahan. Situated in northeastern Thailand, the town is close to Savannakhet in Laos and a good place to chill out for a while after crossing the border into Thailand.
Mukdahan was established in the late Ayutthaya period when a group of people migrated from Laos to this pretty area. Although there is not a lot to entertain here, the lack of flashy attractions makes the town a good place to relax and unwind before exploring the rest of Thailand.
Sitting on the banks of the Mekong River, Mukdahan has a vibrant market place and this is a good place to buy cheap products from Laos, Vietnam and China. Wander along the river-front promenade to browse through the bargains, eat a cheap meal from one of the food stalls and enjoy the views across the river to Laos.
Most people hop across the border from Laos to Mukdahan. If you are traveling from Thailand, fly from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani or Nakhon Phanom and then catch a bus to Mukdahan. A cheaper option is to take a bus but the journey takes around 12 hours.
