Mount Mayon Travel Guide

Mount Mayon is the most active volcano in the Philippines. It is topped by a perfect cone that has led it to being named as one of the world’s most beautiful volcanoes.

Mount Mayon is found in Albay Province close to the capital of the region, Legaspi. It looms directly over the capital, standing at more than 8,000 feet above sea level and visible from practically every vantage point. It comes as no surprise that the volcanic cone is a major postcard theme for Albay.

The volcano last erupted in 2001, providing a sound and light show for tourists who flocked to the site to watch the lava flow (from a distance) after sunset. The vast majority of tourists are Filipinos, but international numbers continue to grow. This history of eruptions makes the soil especially fertile, so the variety of plant life in Mount Mayon National Park is second to none.

Climbing the volcano is possible when there are no government-issued warnings (just check with the visitors’ center). The climb is challenging, requires a guide and is usually divided over two days. Total climbing is only five hours for fit climbers, but giving yourself two days allows an early rise on the second day to get an outstanding view in the early morning before clouds roll in.

Getting There & Away

Legaspi City is the gateway to the entire region and can be reached by air from Manila International Airport in roughly 50 minutes. From here you can book chartered tours of the volcano. Sto Domingo, a coastal resort near Legaspi, is the gateway for hikers. The trailhead begins here and ascends to the summit.
