Mohe is compact: a small grid of streets clustered near the riverfront. Most shops, guesthouses and eateries line the main street and the riverside, while the bus and train stations sit within easy walking distance of the center; travellers usually base themselves in the town center for access to tours and onward transport.

Mohe sits on the northern bank of the Heilong (Amur) River at the border with Russia and is the northernmost county-level town in the People’s Republic of China. The surrounding landscape is boreal forest and wetlands, with permafrost in many areas and long, harsh winters. Administratively part of Heilongjiang, Mohe feels remote - a frontier town built around border control, forestry and seasonal tourism.

The town is modest in size but well known for its high-latitude phenomena: long summer daylight, frigid winters and regular displays of the Northern Lights when solar activity allows. A stone border marker on the riverbank is a local landmark marking the edge of Chinese territory. Visitors should expect basic services, small eateries and guesthouses concentrated near the town center and transport hubs.

People come to Mohe for the chance to see the Aurora Borealis on Chinese soil and to experience an extreme northern environment without crossing into Russia. Its boreal forests, river landscape and isolated feel make it a good base for nature walks, photography and learning about life at a high latitude. Accessibility has improved with scheduled flights and the long train from Harbin, making short stays possible.

Mohe has extreme seasonal contrasts: very cold, dry winters and warm, wet summers. Choose timing based on whether you want aurora chances, milder weather or snow landscapes.

Mohe is remote but reachable by air, rail and long road journeys. Flights shorten travel time significantly compared with the long train ride from provincial centers.

• By Air: Mohe Gulian Airport (OHE): Scheduled flights link Mohe with Harbin and Beijing; the Harbin flight takes around 1 hour 40 minutes and Beijing about 4 hours 45 minutes according to regular schedules. One-way fares vary by season and advance purchase but expect roughly $150-400 for these routes.
• By Train: from Harbin: Overnight and long-distance trains from Harbin take about 20 hours to reach Mohe; soft and hard sleeper options are available. Ticket prices depend on class but long-distance sleepers are commonly priced in the low hundreds of CNY one-way.
• By Road: Long-distance buses and private car travel are possible from regional towns but journeys are long and can be affected by winter conditions; allow extra time and check seasonal schedules.

Mohe is small and easy to explore on foot, but reaching nearby reserves and dark-sky spots requires motor transport. Local transport options are basic and slower in winter.

• Walking: The town center and riverfront are compact and best explored on foot, especially for restaurants, shops and the border marker.
• Taxi and shared minibus: Taxis and shared minibuses connect the town to nearby villages and sights; fares are modest but vary by distance and season, and services may be limited in winter.
• Organized tours and excursions: Local guesthouses and tour desks arrange aurora outings, nature excursions and transfers to reserves; booking ahead in peak seasons is recommended.

Dining is straightforward: small restaurants serving Northeastern Chinese comfort food, simple noodle and rice dishes and occasional Russian-influenced items. Guesthouses often provide breakfast and can arrange packed meals for excursions; stock up on snacks and supplies in town stores before heading into the countryside.

Nightlife is very quiet and centered on guesthouses and small eateries; evenings are more about aurora watching and night photography than bars or clubs. Special events such as the aurora festival bring seasonal evening activity along the riverfront.
