Huangyao is most easily reached by road from nearby transport hubs; direct long-distance bus services and local buses connect it to surrounding cities. Fly into a regional airport and continue by bus or hire a car to reach the town.

• By air: Guilin Liangjiang (KWL) or Nanning Wuxu (NNG): Most visitors fly into Guilin or Nanning and then travel overland; from either airport take a bus or train to Hezhou and continue by local bus or taxi to Huangyao. Expect several hours of total travel from the airport and domestic flight arrivals are the fastest way to reach the region.
• By air: Wuzhou Xijiang (WUZ): Wuzhou is another regional airport option closer to eastern Guangxi; from Wuzhou catch regional buses or a taxi to Hezhou and then a local bus or taxi to Huangyao.
• By bus: from Hezhou: Hezhou is the primary overland hub for reaching Huangyao - regular buses and minibuses run from Hezhou bus stations to the old town. Travel times depend on the service but are a matter of hours rather than half-days; expect local fares quoted in yuan at bus stations.
• By bus: from Guilin or Yangshuo: Direct or connecting buses run from larger tourist towns such as Guilin and Yangshuo, though journeys can be long; many visitors combine Huangyao with an overland itinerary through Guangxi rather than making it a standalone day trip.

Huangyao is compact and best explored on foot; the historic core is pedestrian-friendly but has many uneven, cobbled surfaces. For longer trips use local buses, taxis or prearranged transfers.

• Walking: Most sightseeing is on foot - expect cobbles, narrow alleys and steps, so wear grippy shoes and allow extra time after rain.
• Taxis and local minibuses: Taxis and local minibuses connect the old town with outlying villages and Hezhou; fares are paid in yuan and can be negotiated for nonmetered trips.
• Guided walks and local drivers: Guesthouses can arrange short guided walks, village tours or a driver for excursions to nearby caves and viewpoints.

Eating in Huangyao ranges from simple street stalls and noodle shops to small riverside teahouses and family-run restaurants, serving Guangxi-style rice noodles, river fish and local snacks. Meals are informal and inexpensive; try local noodle dishes and seasonal river produce. Teahouses are a good place to rest and sample regional teas.

Nightlife is quiet and low-key - most evenings are spent in teahouses or small bars at guesthouses, with evening strolls and night photography of lit bridges being the main after-dark activities.

Markets and stalls along the main pedestrian street sell souvenirs, embroidered textiles, carved trinkets and local snacks; bargaining is normal at small stalls. Look for traditional handicrafts and packaged local specialties to take home.
