Chom Thong Travel Guide

A useful stop-off on the way to Thailand's highest mountain, Doi Inthanon, Chom Thong is a small northern Thai town with traditional values and a charm only found in this area of Thailand.

Not unless you're hungry on the way to Doi Inthanon.

A few hours is probably enough time to get the gist of Chom Thong.

Chom Thong is rarely considered a destination in itself, but it's a perfect midway stop if you're driving from Chiang Mai to Doi Inthanon National Park. The streets are lined with classic wooden houses and the main town market is the prefect spot to grab some local northern Thai food.

If you do linger, be sure to visit Wat Phrathat Sri Chom Thong; one of the more impressive ancient Buddhist temples in the area. The temple's viharn is elaborately decorated with wooden features, sacred Buddhist relics and interesting wall murals. It is said that within the golden chedi lies a real relic from the Lord Buddha.

Travel to Chom Thong - Getting There

The nearest airport is found in Chiang Mai and from here, buses run to Chom Thong. Most tours to Doi Inthanon will include a brief stop in Chom Thong on the way to the national park, but the best way to see the town is to rent a car and drive yourself from Chiang Mai.
