Huay Teung Tao Reservoir Travel Guide

About 30 minutes north of Chiang Mai is the popular recreation spot of Huay Teung Tao Reservoir, a great place to fish, boat or just hang out in some fresh air.

The lake is extremely popular with local Thais who come to fish or enjoy a meal at one of the many rustic restaurants located along the banks of the freshwater lake. The water in the lake is runoff from the Doi Suthep - Doi Pui National Park, so it is quite clean despite the commercial activity along its shores.

Most visitors come out for the afternoon to have a picnic. But if you want some exercise, there is a dirt track that leads up the backside of Doi Pui Mountain ideal for hiking or mountain biking. At the entry point of the river into the lake there is a single track trail that leads up the riverbed deep into the jungle.

Visitors can rent paddleboats or fishing gear and there is also a special swimming area if you want to take a refreshing dip. If you want to linger, campsites are available which will cost extra. There is a small admission fee to get into the lake itself.

Getting There & Away

From Chiang Mai, simply take the Canal Road that runs north-south along the western edge of the city. As you head north on the Canal Road you will see signs for the lake on the left. The easiest way to get here is to rent a scooter or car in Chiang Mai and head out for the day. There is no reliable public transportation that services the area. Chiang Mai International Airport is just 30 minutes away.
