Zwentendorf Nuclear Power Plant
Museum Never-activated nuclear plant now used for tours
Near Zwentendorf, the never‑commissioned Zwentendorf Nuclear Power Plant remains intact after Austria’s 1978 referendum; visitors join guided tours to see the reactor hall, exhibits on nuclear technology and debates over energy policy.
Zwentendorf Nuclear Power Plant is a completed but never-operated nuclear reactor complex near the village of Zwentendorf in Lower Austria. The plant was constructed in the 1970s and was finished prior to a 1978 national referendum that resulted in Austria deciding not to run nuclear power plants.
As a result the reactor building was never loaded with fuel and the station never produced commercial electricity. The site is preserved largely in its completed state and today is used for guided tours, technical training and film shoots rather than power generation.
The site sits on the north bank of the Danube in Lower Austria near the village of Zwentendorf and is a short drive from regional towns north-west of Vienna.
- Never commissioned: Construction finished in the late 1970s but the plant never entered commercial operation after a national referendum in 1978 chose not to commission it.
What to See #
- Reactor building: The intact reactor building and primary containment are preserved as-built; the plant was completed but never loaded with nuclear fuel and is used for guided visits and technical training.
- Control room and turbine hall: Control room and turbine hall remain on site and are presented as part of tours explaining plant systems and decommissioning history.
