Zuiderkerk
Church 17th-century Amsterdam church with distinctive bell tower
Early-17th-century Protestant church in Amsterdam’s city centre, known for its brick tower and occasional exhibitions; visitors pair canal-side strolls with interior displays on the city’s history.
Zuiderkerk is a former Protestant church in central Amsterdam built in the early 17th century and designed by the architect Hendrick de Keyser. It is a landmark example of Dutch Reformation-era church architecture.
The exterior brickwork, the articulated gables, and the tall tower are visible from surrounding canals and streets in the Nieuwmarkt area. Interior spaces have been repurposed for temporary exhibitions and municipal uses rather than regular church services.
Construction took place in the first decades of the 1600s as Amsterdam expanded; the building served Protestant congregations for centuries before secular uses increased in the 20th and 21st centuries. The tower and church have been preserved as important examples of early 17th-century civic architecture.
The Zuiderkerk stands in the Nieuwmarkt district of central Amsterdam, close to the city’s canals and within easy walking distance of Amsterdam’s main historic squares and the central railway station.
- Tower height: The church tower rises to about 68 metres and is a notable element of Amsterdam's 17th-century skyline.
- Architectural origin: Built in the early 17th century and designed by the architect Hendrick de Keyser, it was among the first Protestant churches constructed in the city.
