Zugspitze
Mountain Germany's highest peak with alpine views and cablecars
Capping the Bavarian Alps at Germany’s highest elevation, Zugspitze offers cable cars and ridgeline hikes with views into Austria and Germany. Ski slopes, summit restaurants and glaciers make it a year-round destination for alpine activities.
Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany, rising to 2,962 metres on the border between Bavaria and the Austrian state of Tyrol. It is the country’s highest point and a major Alpine destination.
The summit offers a compact observation area with panoramic views over the Zugspitze massif and neighbouring ranges; from clear viewpoints visitors can see hundreds of kilometres on good days. Below the peak the Zugspitzplatt plateau holds permanent snowfields and ski terrain extending several hundred metres down from the summit. Multiple transport links serve the summit including cable cars and a cog railway, allowing day trips from nearby valleys.
The first documented ascent was made in 1820 by Josef Naus and companions; since the late 19th century the mountain has been developed for tourism with summit facilities and lift infrastructure. Over time routes, huts and mechanical lifts transformed it from a mountaineering objective into a year-round visitor destination.
The peak sits on the Wetterstein massif in the Eastern Alps, roughly 90 km south of Munich by road. The nearest towns are Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the German side and Ehrwald on the Austrian side, with mountain-access roads and rail links from both valleys.
- Access and best visibility: The summit plateau can be reached by cable car or cog railway; winter visibility and sunrise views from the summit are often best on clear days after cold, stable weather.
- Weather note: Weather changes rapidly at high altitude - temperatures at the peak are typically 10-15°C colder than in the valley and snow can occur outside winter months.
What to See #
- Zugspitzplatt: Sits directly on the summit ridge and the adjacent high plateau known as the Zugspitzplatt, which hosts permanent snowfields and a glacial cirque below the summit.
- Summit: The marked summit area at 2,962 metres includes an observation platform with panoramic views, a summit cross and visitor facilities.
- Access points: Several cable car and rail links serve the mountain from the Bavarian side (Eibsee) and from Tyrol, providing access year-round for skiers and hikers.
How to Get to Zugspitze #
From Garmisch-Partenkirchen, take the Zugspitzbahn (rack railway) up to the Zugspitzplatt and summit station. From the Eibsee/Grainau side, regular cable cars run to the summit. Roads from Munich (about 90 minutes by car) connect to local stations and parking.
Tips for Visiting Zugspitze #
- Take the Eibsee-Seilbahn (cable car) from Grainau or the Zahnradbahn (rack railway) from Garmisch-Partenkirchen; combine both for a circular return.
- For clearer views, aim for early morning; afternoons can be clouded in by valley weather and day-trippers from Munich.
- Visit the Schneefernerhaus museum near the summit station to learn about Alpine research and the mountain's environmental changes.
Best Time to Visit Zugspitze #
Summer for hiking and views, winter for skiing; use early morning to avoid clouds and crowds.
