Zamość Cathedral

Zamość Cathedral is the principal church of Zamość in southeastern Poland and sits at the heart of the city’s planned Renaissance core. It is a major religious building within the Old City of Zamość, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The church displays Renaissance and later architectural features consistent with the city’s late 16th century layout, including a prominent street-facing elevation and a main interior nave used for liturgical services. Visitors also note funerary monuments and ecclesiastical fittings associated with the Zamoyski family who founded the city.

The cathedral originated as the main collegiate church of the privately founded city of Zamość, laid out in the late 16th century by the Zamoyski family and Italian planners. Over the centuries it has served the local Catholic community and was elevated to cathedral status in 1992 when the current diocese was established.

The building stands on the Great Market Square within Zamość’s Old Town, in Lublin Voivodeship. It occupies a central position in the grid of streets created when the city was founded as a Renaissance ideal town.
