Zakynthos
Island Greek Ionian island famous for Navagio beach
Ionian island Zakynthos draws beachgoers to Navagio (Shipwreck) Bay, sea-cave boat trips, and loggerhead turtle nesting sites around quieter coves, alongside busy resort towns such as Laganas.
Zakynthos is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea known for dramatic limestone cliffs, sandy bays and marine biodiversity. The island is a popular summer tourist destination and an important conservation area for sea turtles.
The island is famous for Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach, a small cove with a rusting wreck on white sand framed by steep cliffs, reachable by boat and visible from an elevated coastal viewpoint. Coastal boat tours also visit the Blue Caves, and the island’s southern beaches, especially in Laganas Bay, are notable nesting grounds for loggerhead sea turtles.
Zakynthos has a long history of Venetian, Ottoman and modern Greek influence, developing as a maritime and tourist economy over centuries. The modern tourism industry expanded strongly in the 20th century, centred on beaches and coastal activities.
The island lies off the western coast of mainland Greece in the Ionian Sea, west of the Peloponnese; its main town is Zakynthos (city) on the east coast and it is accessible by ferry and air links from mainland Greece.
- Turtle conservation: Southern beaches host important loggerhead turtle nesting sites; certain beaches have seasonal protections and visitor restrictions during nesting season.
What to See #
- Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach: A steep-walled cove on the island's northwest coast featuring a rusting shipwreck on white sand and sheer limestone cliffs; accessible by boat and visible from coastal viewpoints above the cove.
- Blue Caves: A series of sea caves and tunnels along the northern coast formed in limestone, often visited by boat for their intensely blue waters and reflected light.
- Laganas Bay / turtle nesting beaches: Laganas Bay and southern beaches which are important nesting grounds for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) and an area of protected coastline.
How to Get to Zakynthos #
Fly: Zakynthos is served by Zakynthos International Airport (ZTH, “Dionysios Solomos”) with seasonal direct flights from Athens and many European cities; from the airport it’s a short taxi or KTEL bus ride into Zakynthos Town (the island’s main hub).
Ferry/drive: Regular car ferries sail to Zakynthos from the Peloponnese port of Kyllini (the crossing takes about an hour); Kyllini is reached by road from Athens (roughly a 3-3.5 hour drive). Once on the island, the main roads link the airport, Zakynthos Town and coastal resorts - local KTEL buses and taxis serve the main stops.
Tips for Visiting Zakynthos #
- For Navagio (Shipwreck) plan to view it from the cliff viewpoint early in the morning to avoid the largest boat crowds below; note the beach itself is only reachable by licensed boat tours departing from harbors such as Zakynthos Town or nearby north-coast landing points.
- Book a small-boat trip to the Blue Caves from the Skinari/north‑coast area and aim for a calm-morning departure-conditions are calmer then and light can make the caves' water glow.
- If you want to see loggerhead turtles, join a licensed ecotour operating from Laganas or the island's small harbors during early morning or late afternoon when sightings are more likely and Marine Park rules are followed.
- Avoid the August peak by visiting in late May-June or September for far fewer crowds on roads and beaches while the sea remains warm.
Best Time to Visit Zakynthos #
Best to visit Zakynthos in the late spring or early autumn for warm weather, swimming, and far fewer crowds than peak summer.
