Zakros Gorge
Archaeological Site Steep coastal gorge with Minoan archaeological sites
Narrow gorge on eastern Crete cutting to the sea near Zakros village; hikers follow trails past rock faces and visit nearby Minoan ruins at Kato Zakros and small Cretan coves.
Zakros Gorge is a narrow coastal canyon on eastern Crete near the village of Zakros and the coastal settlement Kato Zakros, noted for its compact scale and direct descent to the sea. It sits adjacent to a well-known Bronze Age site, the Minoan palace at Kato Zakros.
The gorge offers a short, scenic walk through rocky, often vertical walls with olive and scrub vegetation; the route ends at the small bay and archaeological site at Kato Zakros. Hikers use the path for a brief canyon walk rather than a long mountain trek.
The area around the gorge has Bronze Age associations through the nearby Minoan palace at Kato Zakros, a coastal administrative complex of the Minoan civilization dating to the second millennium BCE. Modern usage is recreational and archaeological rather than industrial.
The gorge lies on the eastern coast of Crete in the Sitia area of the island, immediately inland from Kato Zakros and close to the shoreline of the Aegean Sea.
- Trail conditions: Trail is uneven and can be steep in places; wear sturdy shoes, bring water and sun protection as there is little shade inside the gorge.
