Zakros
Archaeological Site Minoan archaeological site and coastal village in Crete
On eastern Crete, Zakros pairs Minoan ruins with pebble beaches and a steep gorge. Archaeological remains, quiet seaside tavernas and coastal walks attract people interested in ancient history and low-key seaside days.
Zakros is a coastal village and archaeological area on eastern Crete notable for the ruins of a Minoan palace complex at Kato Zakros. The site forms part of Crete’s Bronze Age Minoan heritage and lies on a rugged stretch of coastline.
The site’s visible remains include foundations, chambers and storerooms characteristic of Minoan palace architecture; nearby there are beaches, local tavernas and trails used by visitors. The adjacent Zakros Gorge provides a popular walking route from inland villages down to the coast.
Archaeological investigation has identified the settlement as part of the Minoan civilisation active in the Bronze Age; finds from the site have helped understand Minoan administrative and trade activity on eastern Crete.
Zakros sits on the east coast of Crete near the modern village of Kato Zakros, within the regional unit of Lasithi and relatively close to the town of Sitia and other eastern Cretan access points.
- Minoan palace: The archaeological site at Kato Zakros contains remains of a Minoan palace complex and is one of the easternmost major Minoan settlements on Crete.
- Zakros Gorge hike: A popular local activity is the walk through the nearby Zakros Gorge, which connects inland trails with the coastal site and offers geological features and views.
What to See #
- Kato Zakros Palace: Ruins of a Minoan administrative and residential complex on the eastern coast of Crete with visible foundations, storerooms and pottery finds that date to the Bronze Age.
- Zakros Gorge: A steep coastal gorge that descends to the sea near Kato Zakros; the trail through the gorge is a recognised local hike linking inland villages with the archaeological site and beach.
How to Get to Zakros #
Zakros (Kato Zakros) is on eastern Crete. By car it is most easily reached from the nearby towns of Sitia (roughly 30-40 km to the west) or from Agios Nikolaos (about 70-80 km to the west) via the island’s north-coast road (the main east-west route, often signed as the national road/EO90 on maps).
Regional buses (KTEL) connect Sitia and Agios Nikolaos with villages in the easternmost part of Crete, though services to Kato Zakros are less frequent; from the nearest bus stop the archeological site and beach are a short walk.
Tips for Visiting Zakros #
- Go early in the morning to combine a visit to the Minoan Palace ruins with a hike through the Kato Zakros (Lower Zakros) gorge before midday heat; the seaside end of the gorge is quieter late in the day as day‑trippers depart.
- Access the archaeological site from the Kato Zakros village side to pair the palace visit with the coastal scenery and the small local tavernas; many visitors only stop briefly at the ruins and miss the dramatic gorge and the little bay at the trail's end.
Best Time to Visit Zakros #
Best in spring or autumn for pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds; summer is hottest and busiest.
