Zagori Cultural Landscape
Historical Site Mountainous cultural landscape with stone villages and bridges
Zagori features stone-built villages, arched masonry bridges and deep gorges; hikers tackle Vikos Gorge trails, stay in traditional guesthouses and inspect vernacular stone architecture.
A cultural landscape in the Epirus region of northwestern Greece characterized by rugged mountains, deep river gorges and a dense cluster of traditional stone villages known collectively as Zagorochoria. The area is noted for its vernacular stone architecture, arched bridges and well-preserved rural landscape.
A principal natural highlight is a steep limestone gorge carved by a river that runs for roughly 20 kilometres and reaches vertical relief on the order of 1,000 metres in sections. The landscape also contains dozens of historic villages with stone houses, chapels and communal squares, plus a network of footpaths that link settlements.
The villages and infrastructure developed over centuries under changing political conditions, with most surviving stone-built fabric dating from the Ottoman and post-Ottoman eras when local craft traditions and rural economies were strong. Bridges and paths were maintained to support pastoralism, trade and seasonal migration.
The Zagori area sits in the Pindus mountain zone of Epirus in northwestern Greece, within driving distance northwest of the city of Ioannina, and is bounded by high peaks and forested ridges.
