Zaanstreek
Area Historic riverine region with windmills and industrial heritage
The Zaan region north of Amsterdam centers on working windmills, 19th-century industrial buildings and the open-air museum at Zaanse Schans; visitors come for mills, craft demonstrations and riverside timber houses along the Zaan.
Zaanstreek is the historic industrial region along the Zaan River in North Holland, Netherlands, noted for its dense concentration of wind- and water-powered mills and traditional wooden architecture. The area played a major role in the Netherlands’ early industrial economy.
The open-air heritage site Zaanse Schans, where restored and relocated windmills and houses illustrate trades such as sawmilling, oil pressing and paint production; the Zaans Museum nearby documents the region’s industrial and social history. The landscape is characterised by canals, low-lying polder land and rows of historic mills.
The Zaan area’s rise as an industrial centre dates principally to the 17th and 18th centuries when numerous mills operated along the river for processing wood, oilseeds and other materials. In the 20th century parts of the heritage were consolidated and conserved to preserve representative buildings and working mills.
Geographically the Zaanstreek lies immediately northwest of Amsterdam, centred on the town of Zaandam and stretching along the Zaan River; it is readily accessible from Amsterdam by road and rail.
- Industrial heritage: The Zaan region was one of the earliest industrialised areas in Europe, with a concentration of water- and wind-powered mills from the 17th and 18th centuries.
- Proximity to Amsterdam: The heritage cluster at Zaanse Schans is about 15 kilometres northwest of central Amsterdam and is the most visited part of the region.
What to See #
- Zaanse Schans: An open-air conservation area featuring restored and relocated historic windmills, traditional wooden houses and workshops; many of the buildings on display were moved to the site in the 1960s to preserve them.
- Zaandam: The town of Zaandam is the urban centre of the region and retains industrial-era buildings and canals that reflect the area's development during the 17th and 18th centuries.
- Zaans Museum: The Zaans Museum documents the industrial and social history of the Zaan area and sits close to the windmill sites, presenting collections on traditional trades such as sawmilling and oil pressing.
