Zaanse Schans
Museum Open-air museum of historic windmills and crafts
North of Amsterdam, Zaanse Schans recreates 18th-19th-century industry with working windmills, painted wooden houses, cheese and clog demonstrations and small craft museums.
Zaanse Schans is an open-air conservation area and tourist village near Zaandam in North Holland that showcases historic Dutch windmills, wooden houses and artisanal workshops. It was developed in the mid-20th century to preserve and display regional industrial and domestic architecture.
In the 1960s and 1970s buildings from the surrounding Zaan region were relocated and restored to create a coherent historical ensemble; the site has since been managed to conserve traditional structures and demonstrate historic crafts. The windmills themselves date to earlier centuries and have been maintained or reconstructed as working examples.
The site lies on the banks of the Zaan river near the town of Zaandam, north of Amsterdam, and is readily reached from the Amsterdam region by road and public transport.
- Heritage preservation: The site is an open-air conservation area built from relocated and restored buildings to preserve Zaans industrial heritage; many structures date stylistically to the 18th and 19th centuries.
