About York Park#
York Park, commonly known by its sponsored name Aurora Stadium, is the primary outdoor sports stadium in Launceston, Tasmania. It is a multi-purpose venue used for Australian rules football, cricket and large public events.
The stadium consists of a grass playing surface surrounded by stands and corporate facilities and is the region’s main venue for high-profile sporting fixtures and concerts. Match-day facilities and seating make it suitable for regional and national events.
The ground has evolved from a municipal oval to a modern stadium through staged upgrades to seating, lighting and spectator amenities. It functions as Launceston’s principal large-capacity outdoor venue.
York Park is located within central Launceston on the city’s northern side, within easy reach of the city centre and local transport links.
- Main uses and capacity: Also known commercially as Aurora Stadium, the venue hosts Australian rules football, cricket and concerts and has a seating capacity around 20,000.
How to Get to York Park#
From Launceston city centre the stadium is an easy 10-15 minute drive along Cimitiere and Invermay roads. Local buses 1 and 10 stop near the Inveresk precinct; on match days look for shuttle services from central Launceston hubs. Parking is available on-site but fills fast - cycle parking is often the quickest option for solo visitors.
Tips for Visiting York Park#
- Arrive at least 30-45 minutes before first bounce for cheaper parking and easier entry; the southern car parks fill first.
- Use the University of Tasmania (Inveresk) signage rather than "York Park" - most locals now call it UTAS Stadium.
- If attending an AFL match, sit on the eastern stands for the best view of the playing surface and the harbor beyond.
- Bring a small binocular for sightlines on clear nights - at capacity (around 20,000) the crowd becomes part of the show.
