Yasuní National Park

Yasuní National Park is a large protected area in Ecuador’s Amazon basin that conserves lowland rainforest, extensive river systems, and exceptional biological diversity. It is widely recognised for its high concentrations of plant and animal species and for preserving intact primary forest.

The park offers research stations and guided ecotourism opportunities that focus on wildlife viewing, river excursions and rainforest walks; access is controlled and often coordinated through park authorities or authorised tour operators. The landscape includes terra firme forest, seasonally flooded areas and extensive indigenous lands within the park boundaries.

Yasuní has long been the focus of conservation attention because of its biodiversity values and cultural importance to indigenous peoples of the Amazon. Management combines national protected-area regulations with collaborative initiatives involving communities and researchers.

Geographically Yasuní lies in eastern Ecuador within the Amazon lowlands (Napo and Orellana provinces nearby); it is remote from major cities and typically reached by river and air transfers from regional gateways.

• Indigenous territories and access: The park includes indigenous territories and is home to several indigenous peoples; access to some areas is restricted and visits are usually arranged through authorised guides and research stations.
