The park covers a large area of montane forest and cloud forest across steep Andean slopes, supporting high biodiversity and many endemic species; hiking trails and observation points are used for birdwatching and wildlife viewing.
Designated and managed by the Peruvian government in 1986, the park was created to protect headwaters, watersheds and intact montane ecosystems; nearby communities use the zone for low-impact ecotourism and traditional activities.
The park sits on the eastern slopes of the central Andes in Pasco Department, adjacent to the Oxapampa/Villa Rica area, within a rugged, river-cut landscape of cloud forest and high Andean ridges.
