The building’s principal fabric dates from between the 11th and 13th centuries and displays Romanesque massing and structural elements. The interior and crypt contain episcopal tombs and ecclesiastical fittings of historical interest.
The cathedral was substantially damaged during aerial bombing in 1945 and subsequently rebuilt and restored in the postwar decades.
It is situated in central Würzburg close to the Main River and adjacent to the city’s historic core and the Würzburg Residence complex.
