Wolin National Park
Park Coastal national park on Wolin Island, Baltic cliffs
On Poland’s Baltic coast, Wolin National Park protects cliffs, beaches and coastal forests on Wolin island. Birdwatchers, hikers and sea‑swimmers visit capes like Gosań and follow shore trails and inlet paths.
Wolin National Park is a protected area on the island of Wolin in north-western Poland that conserves Baltic coastlines, sea cliffs, dunes and mixed forests. It was established in the mid-20th century to protect the island’s distinct coastal and island ecosystems.
Visitors are drawn to the park’s steep sea cliffs and headlands, its shoreline trails and the diversity of birdlife and marine-edge habitats. The park also maintains areas where European bison have been reintroduced and can be seen in managed herds.
The park preserves habitats ranging from open beaches and dunes to beech and mixed forest, and includes marked walking routes and viewpoints along the coast. Conservation work focuses on coastal processes, migratory birds and habitat restoration.
Wolin National Park occupies a portion of Wolin island’s northern shore in West Pomeranian Voivodeship, with the seaside town of Międzyzdroje located near its main access points.
- Location and habitats: The park is located on the island of Wolin near the seaside resort town of Międzyzdroje and protects coastal cliffs, dunes and mixed forest habitats along the Baltic coast.
- European bison: A free-ranging population or small herds of European bison have been maintained in the park as part of conservation and reintroduction efforts.
What to See #
- Sea cliffs and headlands: Coastal sea cliffs and headlands on the island's northern shore that are a characteristic feature of the park's coastline and provide viewpoints over the Baltic Sea.
- Inland habitats and trails: Mixed coastal and forest habitats inland, including dunes, meadows and woodland that support migratory birds and native mammals; several marked trails allow visitors to explore these habitats.
How to Get to Wolin National Park #
Wolin National Park sits on Wolin island in north-western Poland near the town of Międzyzdroje. By car it is about 90-110 km west of Szczecin (roughly a 1.5-2 hour drive); follow the main roads west toward Międzyzdroje and then local roads onto the island.
Regional trains and intercity buses run from Szczecin to Międzyzdroje (seasonal frequency varies); from Międzyzdroje the park entrances and beaches are a short drive or a local bus/taxi ride away.
Tips for Visiting Wolin National Park #
- Arrive early in the morning or late afternoon for the best coastal light and quieter walking on the headlands; many day-trippers from Międzyzdroje concentrate on the seaside promenade and leave the park's headlands and interior trails peaceful.
- Use parking and trailheads around Międzyzdroje to access the park's most dramatic coastal cliffs and headlands-follow marked trails to viewpoints rather than attempting unmarked shorelines.
- Explore both the seaside cliffs and the inland forests and lagoon shores: birdwatching and shoreline viewpoints on the lagoon side are often less crowded than the main sea‑cliff viewpoints.
Best Time to Visit Wolin National Park #
