Windmill Islands
Island Archipelago of rocky Antarctic islands near Casey Station
Archipelago off Wilkes Land mapped during U.S. Navy Operation Windmill (1947-48); researchers visit for seabird colonies and exposed rock, and some expedition cruises include landings for wildlife and history.
Windmill Islands are a group of mostly rocky, low-lying islands and islets off the Budd Coast of Wilkes Land in Antarctica, lying near 66°S, 110°E. They were charted and named after Operation Windmill, a U.S. expedition that surveyed Antarctic coastal areas in 1947-48.
The islands are largely ice-free in summer and host seabird colonies and other Antarctic coastal wildlife where suitable nesting habitat exists; they are also of interest for geological and biological research. Landings are seasonal and subject to Antarctic Treaty protections and environmental restrictions.
The name and initial mapping date to the postwar period when several nations expanded Antarctic exploration; since then the islands have been used as locations for biological surveys and occasional field camps. The region is managed under the Antarctic Treaty System and related environmental protocols.
Geographically the Windmill Islands lie just offshore of the East Antarctic coastline in the vicinity of research stations on the Wilkes Land coast. Access is by ship or helicopter from scientific bases during the austral summer and conditions are remote and weather-dependent.
- Name origin: Named after Operation Windmill, a U.S. Antarctic expedition that conducted coastal surveys in 1947-48.
- Location note: Located off the Budd Coast of Wilkes Land near 66°S, 110°E and close to research infrastructure in the region.
How to Get to Windmill Islands #
The Windmill Islands are accessible only as part of Antarctic expeditions, typically from research vessels or specialized cruise ships operating in the Antarctic summer (November-March). Access requires coordination with national Antarctic programs or private expedition operators and adherence to Antarctic Treaty regulations.
Tips for Visiting Windmill Islands #
- If visiting with a research or expedition team, ensure strict biosecurity - Antarctic ecosystems are highly vulnerable.
- There are no visitor facilities; approach only as part of an organised, permitted scientific or expedition cruise.
- Bring binoculars; the islands are prime spots for seabird and seal observation.
