Wildspitze
Mountain Austria's second-highest peak and Tyrol's highest summit
Wildspitze stands as the Ötztal Alps’ highest peak, drawing climbers and ski‑tourers to glaciated routes and alpine huts; visitors seek high‑mountain views, glacier travel and long ridge ascents.
Wildspitze is a high Alpine peak in the Ötztal Alps of Tyrol, Austria, with an elevation of 3,768 metres. It is the highest summit in the Ötztal range and one of Austria’s highest mountains, popular with mountaineers and ski-tourers.
Routes to the summit typically cross glaciers and use established alpine paths; the peak offers wide views across the Central Eastern Alps on clear days. There are several recognised approaches from different valleys, and the climb is commonly combined with overnight stays in alpine huts.
The mountain formed as part of the uplift and glaciation of the Ötztal Alps; its glaciers and routes have been used by climbers since the 19th century and continue to change with local glacial retreat. Modern access is supported by marked routes and mountain infrastructure.
Wildspitze sits in the high Alps of Tyrol, above the Ötztal valley and near the border with South Tyrol (Italy). The nearest larger towns are Sölden to the south and Imst to the north, linked by mountain access roads.
- Elevation: At 3,768 metres it is the highest peak in the Ötztal Alps and the second-highest mountain in Austria, and climbing commonly involves glacier travel.
- Climbing conditions: Most ascents are made from mountain huts and require alpine equipment and glacier skills; summer is the main climbing season.
How to Get to Wildspitze #
Common bases are Sölden and Vent in the Ötztal valley (accessible by bus from Ötztal Bahnhof and by regional trains to Ötztal). From Sölden take local transport or taxi to Vent (about 40-60 minutes), then follow marked trails to the glacier huts that serve ascent routes (reserve hut places in high season). Glacier travel and roped parties are usually required for the final ascent.
Tips for Visiting Wildspitze #
- Hire a certified mountain guide unless the party has glacier-travel experience; crevasses and cornices are routine.
- Acclimatize in Sölden or Vent for a day or two; altitude and weather will take climbers by surprise.
- Start early from the hut (often before dawn) to avoid afternoon wind and unstable snow.
- Check Austrian Alpine Club hut availability (reserve in advance during July-September).
Best Time to Visit Wildspitze #
Wildspitze is best attempted in the high-summer months when huts operate and crevasse routes are most manageable; outside of July-September conditions become alpine and technical.
