Wildhorn
Mountain Alpine mountain in Valais popular with hikers
An Alpine peak on the Valais-Bern border, Wildhorn attracts hikers and ski-tourers with glacier slopes, mountain huts and panoramic ridge climbs accessible from valley lift stations.
Wildhorn is a mountain in the Bernese Alps located on the border between the cantons of Valais and Bern in western Switzerland. It is a prominent alpine summit in the region and a local landmark for outdoor recreation.
The area around the peak offers alpine hiking, mountaineering and ski-touring opportunities on steep, glaciated and rocky slopes; approaches are made from valley settlements on both the Valais and Bern sides. Trails and route choices vary in difficulty and require standard alpine experience on crevassed or exposed terrain.
The summit and surrounding ridges are the product of Alpine orogeny and subsequent glacial sculpting; the landscape has been shaped by repeated glaciations rather than by human construction. The mountain has long been used for grazing, seasonal mountain routes and recreational climbing.
The peak sits in the western Swiss Alps within Valais territory but directly adjacent to Bern, in a high-alpine landscape of ridges and glaciers. It lies inland from the Rhône valley and is accessible from valley roads and mountain passes in the region.
- Seasonal access: Best visited in summer for hiking and in late winter or spring by experienced ski tourers when snow conditions allow.
