Wild Nephin National Park
National Park Irish park protecting remote blanket bog and mountains
Remote park in County Mayo protecting blanket bog, the Nephin Beg mountains and peatland wilderness. Walkers seek rugged trails, dark-sky viewing and extensive bog landscapes.
Wild Nephin National Park is a protected wilderness area in County Mayo, western Ireland, designated to conserve large tracts of Atlantic blanket bog and upland mountain habitats; it was first created in 1998 as Ballycroy National Park and later expanded.
The park is valued for remote walking, peatland ecosystems and mountain terrain. Key visitor experiences are lowland and upland bog landscape walks, routes into the Nephin Beg Range including the summit of Nephin (about 806 m), and wildlife and habitat interpretation at on-site facilities.
The park was established by the Irish state in 1998 and enlarged in a subsequent extension that broadened its protected area and scope for conservation and recreation. Management focuses on peatland preservation, controlled public access and restoration of degraded areas.
Located in northwest County Mayo in the province of Connacht, the park lies inland from the Atlantic coast and is reached via regional roads from nearby towns in the Erris area. The landscape is predominantly blanket bog, interspersed with mountain ranges and small lakes.
- Establishment and expansion: Originally established as Ballycroy National Park in 1998, the protected area was expanded and rebranded as Wild Nephin following a major enlargement.
- Blanket bog: The park preserves extensive Atlantic blanket bog, one of the largest relatively intact peatland systems in western Europe and of interest to ecology and conservation studies.
What to See #
- Nephin Beg Range / Nephin peak: A rugged upland massif that includes the Nephin Beg Range and the summit of Nephin, the park's highest point at about 806 m.
- Owenduff/Nephin bog complex: An internationally important Atlantic blanket bog complex extending across much of the park and forming a largely intact peatland habitat.
- Ballycroy/Wild Nephin visitor facilities: The visitor and interpretation facilities established to support walking routes and information on the park's ecology and access.
Tips for Visiting Wild Nephin National Park #
- Plan visits in late spring through early autumn for longer daylight and firmer ground; much of the park is bogland and can be difficult underfoot after heavy rain.
- Start at the national park visitor centre (the Ballycroy area serves as the regional gateway) to pick up up-to-date trail information, maps and advice on seasonal access and guided options.
- Stick to marked trails and boardwalks to protect fragile bog habitats and avoid getting bogged down - allow extra time for slower, rough sections and for navigating remote stretches.
- Bring a detailed map or GPS route and tell someone your intended route; parts of Wild Nephin are remote and cellular coverage can be patchy, so plan logistics and transport in advance.
