Main image

The Wiehen Hills are a low hill range in northwestern Germany that form a narrow east-west ridge on the northern edge of the German uplands. The range rises above surrounding lowlands and is a distinct regional landscape feature.

Topography consists of forested slopes, small summits and open ridgelines that are commonly crossed by local paths and minor roads. The hills reach modest elevations and host rural villages, farmland and recreational trails.

Historically the ridge has served as a local boundary and a source of timber and pasture; over time it has remained a largely rural and recreational area. Conservation and outdoor recreation are common uses of the hill country today.

Geographically the range lies between the cities of Osnabrück and Minden, spanning parts of North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony in northwestern Germany.

  • Maximum elevation: The highest point in the range is approximately 320 metres above sea level, making it a low upland ridge rather than high mountains.
  • Recreational use: The ridgeline forms a noticeable landscape feature between the cities of Osnabrück and Minden and is used for local hiking and cycling routes.

How to Get to Wiehen Hills #

The Wiehen Hills (Wiehengebirge) are best reached from the nearby regional cities of Bielefeld or Osnabrück. Take regional trains (Deutsche Bahn RB/RE services) to towns on the ridge such as Lübbecke, Bad Essen, Bünde or Melle, then follow signed car roads and forest-trailheads to hiking access points; from Bielefeld or Osnabrück expect roughly a 25-35 km drive to central ridge trailheads. From the small railway stations on the ridge many popular trailheads are a 1-3 km walk.

Tips for Visiting Wiehen Hills #

  • Visit early in the morning or late afternoon on weekdays - the light from the Kaiser-Wilhelm viewpoint at Porta Westfalica (Wittekindsberg) is best and it's far less crowded than weekend midday hikes.
  • Use the Porta Westfalica / Wittekindsberg trailhead and car park if you want the quickest route to the main panoramic viewpoints; the monument there is the classic photo spot.
  • Most visitors stick to the ridge; for quieter walking and a different landscape take the valley- and village-side trails toward small towns on the hill's flanks to find less-used paths and local character.
